I've heard some teachers report they will type their comments into a word processor, then copy/paste them into the report cards. That way, if anything goes wrong they have a backup of thier comments.
Another teacher printed the web page report card during testing. If you did that for every student you'd have an ugly, but usable, paper backup incase the beta testing goes awry. Teachers could use that printout to fill in the nicely formatted report cards by hand. I'd recommend using scrap paper for this paper intensive method!!
